Verlene Amelia Davis Verlene Amelia Davis was born on February 2, 1928 in Floydada, Texas to Jesse and Elsie Vivian (nee Manning) McSpadden. She passed away on Monday, September 30, 2013 in Elk Grove Village. Verlene was definitely a unique person and very proud of it. She had a very sarcastic sense of humor and lots of her own sayings to go along with it. She was first and foremost “Mother” and many people called her that in addition to her children. She made sure that her kids had a great childhood under challenging circumstances. She was a minister's wife but she always said she married a farmer not a minister so she would do what she pleased. Fortunately, it pretty much pleased her to act like a minister's wife. Way up with the farmers in a very small town in Northern Maine, Mother dressed to the nines, wore hats and heels and suits every Sunday. She joined the Caribou Junior Women's League, met Margaret Chase Smith, became friends with judges and farmers. She made her mark. She and E.R.devoted themselves to the church. They have friends and admirers across the globe. They were both witty and intelligent and had a great way with people. Mother's sharp intelligence immediately either drew people in or scared them. Mother's fierce force was in effect even in the last few months when she could hardly speak and could barely walk with a walker; she found a way to enforce her will. She and her mischievous sense of humor will be missed. Verlene is survived by her spouse of 65 years, Earl "E.R." Davis, her children, Paul (Sharon) Davis, Patricia (Chip) Brooks, Janet (David Arnold) Davis and Cynthia Brooks; her grandchildren, Erin (Tony) Yarhaus, Sally Brooks, Hannah, Jamie and Max Brooks, and Chance Arnold; and her sister, Shirley (Jim) Whitfield.
