Arthur Raymond Erbach of Arlington Heights, formerly of Des Plaines, was born January 4, 1931 in Chicago to Andrew and Apollonia (nee Etzkorn) Erbach. He passed away September 30, 2011 at his home in Arlington Heights.

Mr. Erbach was a former Des Plaines alderman and active community leader. He was the devoted husband of Eileen Therese (Finn) and loving father of Paul (Todd Salemi), Christopher (Margaret), Michael (Cheryl), Mary Zissman (Steve) and Peggy Suqi. He was loved and admired by his nine grandchildren and his life was enriched by knowing his four great grandchildren, Michelle and David Baum and great granddaughter Haley; John and Tiffany Erbach and great granddaughters Lily, Emma and Violet; Alan and Kayla Erbach; Dane and Emily Erbach; and Holly Zissman, Austen Suqi, Cara Zissman, Hanna Suqi, and Daniel Zissman. He is survived by his dear sister Rita Kuhnen Schirro of Thiensville, Wisconsin, his brother and sister-in-law Robert and Dorothy Erbach of Prospect Heights, and seventeen nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Apollonia Erbach and a brother Andrew.

Erbach was a veteran of the US Army in the 1950s. A mechanical engineer who received his ME from Northwestern in Evanston, IL, he held patents involved with the U.S. space program, designed advanced medical equipment, engineered transmission filters used on most US built cars for the automotive industry, and designed Weber Grill products (having engineered and designed the round Weber Bug Zapper). He was active in his community, where he was elected and served 12 years as Alderman of Des Plaines Fifth Ward after neighbors asked him to serve and supported his election. He also served as Cubmaster of Cub Scout Pack 145, was an Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 60, and served on the Algonquin District BSA Committee. He was a long-time, active community member of St. Stephen’s Parish in Des Plaines, serving as lector and leader of song, and mentored the high school-aged youth of the parish as a CCD teacher.

Erbach enjoyed wood carving and fishing, was an avid wood-worker who built numerous beautiful projects for his family & friends, and was known to spontaneously break into song. He was genuinely friendly to all and an inspiration to most.

His life provided examples to all of us of honesty and integrity, the importance of family, accomplishments in our work, active involvement to support and improve our community, humility in situations of responsibility and influence, and peace and contentment with life under all circumstances.
