Francis DeSales
Powell, formerly of
Boston, was born May
6, 1918 to J. Eris
and Mary (nee
Conroy) Powell in
Washington DC. He
died Friday, October
23, 2009 at the
Lutheran Home and
Services in
Arlington Heights.
Dr. Powell received
his Ph.D. from
Georgetown
University and did
postdoctoral work in
sociology at
Harvard. He
conducted research
in medical sociology
at the Tavistock
Institute of Human
Relations in England
and at the
Mediziniches
Hochschule in
Hannover, Germany.
He was also an
adjunct faculty
member at the
Massachusetts
Institute for Social
and Economic
Research at the
University of
Massachusetts-Amherst.
Among his
publications are
Theory of Coping
Systems: Change in
Supportive Health
Organizations and
Health Care Systems
in Transition: An
International
Perspective. His
most recent work
describes the
evolution of
“corporatist” health
care systems in
Canada, Britain,
Sweden and Germany
and proposes new
models for health
care in the U.S.
He is survived by
his children, Mary
D., Austin T.
(Denise), David C.
(Carol), Justin M.
(Laura), and Kathryn
M. (Alan Kacimi)
Powell; his 11
grandchildren; his
sister-in-law
Patricia Powell.
Francis is preceded
in death by his wife
Madeleine (nee
Benoist); and his
brothers Ralph
Austin Powell, O.P.,
John (Marge) Powell
and Jerome Powell.
