Jeannette Edna Timm
Of Chicago

Jeannette Edna Timm was born March 17, 1914 in Chicago to Dillard B. and Mary Edna (nee Prickett) Baker. She returned to her heavenly Father on Saturday, September 24, 2011 surrounded by her family at Lutheran Home and Services in Arlington Heights.

Jeannette was the last child and second daughter of Dillard Baird and Mary Edna (Prickett) Baker. She attended Belding Elementary School and graduated from Schurz High School. During the summers of her teenage years she worked for her grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Prickett, in Nappanee, Indiana. After graduating from Schurz she went to work as secretary in her father’s downtown law firm. She was a member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Chicago, where she was active in the Walther League and sang in the choir. It was there she met her future husband Vernon W. Timm, and they married on September 5, 1936. Six children, 3 boys and 3 girls, were born to this union. In 1940 they took up residence in North Mayfair. After Vernon’s death in 1959, she maintained the same home, continued to be involved in the community, and made life-long friendships for 71 years.

To support her family, she worked as secretary of Mt. Olive Church, Evanston City Hall and the Pastoral Care Department of Lutheran General Hospital, later returning to LGH serving as a volunteer after her retirement maintaining those friendships over the next 35 years.

Jeannette had a sharp mind and her quick wit brought smiles and a lot of laughter to her family. That personality drew people to her and she was much loved by her family and friends. She collected, as any family member would say, “stuff”, which included stamps, coins, spoons, postcards and box loads of family memories taken with her “vintage” cameras. She loved to participate in the many family gatherings and not wanting to miss one was proud of the fact that at the age of 95 traveled by air alone to do so. St. Patrick’s Day will forever be remembered as “Open House at Grandma Jen’s” to celebrate her life. She also loved to read, play Pinochle, nurture her garden, watch the Cubs while munching on M&Ms, and write poems that include:
Vern was our first-born child
So good and dear, we then went wild.
Had five more--two boys, three girls
Lots of noise and plenty of curls.
But now that I am old and gray
This is what I want to say--

“Thank you God for every day
That brought our family work and play.
Life without them would be sad
But now I’m going to be with Dad.”
Be good to one another!

She is survived by her children, Vernon (Charlotte) Timm Jr., Thomas (Jan) Timm, Marilyn (Gary) Manda, Marjorie (Wayne) Sunderlin, Frederick (Carol) Timm, and Valerie (Roger) Price; her 18 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild; 2 nieces and 3 nephews.

Jeannette was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Timm Sr.; her grandchildren, Douglas, Donna, Brett, and Michael; her parents; and her siblings, Edith (the late Oliver) Johnson, and Dillard (the late Gladys) Baker Jr.
