Richard D. Smith
Of Arlington Heights

Richard D. Smith, formerly of Presque Isle, Wisconsin, was born July 25, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois to Earl Charles and Helen Emeline (nee Schach) Smith. He passed away, with his children by his side, Wednesday, September 21, 2005 at his home in Arlington Heights

Mr. Smith was an architectural engineer. As a young adult, he worked as a smoke jumper in the Bitterroot Mountains of Idaho. Richard enlisted in the Army at the end of his junior year of high school. At Fort Benning he was trained in parachuting and gliding. In Alaska, he was trained in Advanced Extreme Cold Maneuvers. During WWII, he served in Japan. Although he never received his GED, Richard passed the University of Illinois entrance exam. It was there that he received a BA in Architectural Design-1951, a BS in Architectural Engineering-1952, and a BS in Civil Engineering-1953. After graduating from the University of Illinois, Richard worked for the NFPA (National Fire Protective Association) from 1953-1954. He then went on to CCNY where he received his Associates Degree in Constitutional Law. Following this, Mr. Smith received a MBA from the University of Chicago.

His survivors include his children Jackie (Jim Fallis) Smith of Indianapolis, Indiana, Pam Stewart of Indianapolis, Lynn (Brian) Robinson of Palatine, Beth (Andy) Lawrence of Bristol, Wisconsin and David (Nancy) Smith of Arlington Heights; nine grandchildren; one great grandchild; and his brother Earl (Libby) Smith, Jr.; and his former wife, Doreen Smith.

Memorial Visitation will be held Sunday, October 2, 2005 from 2:00 PM until the time of service at 4:00 PM at the Glueckert Funeral Home, Ltd., 1520 N. Arlington Heights Road, (4 blocks south of Palatine Road) Arlington Heights. Memorial Service will be at 4:00 PM at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Vitas Hospice 580 Waters Edge, Suite 100, Lombard, IL 60148 or to a charity of your choice.
