Nancy C. Condon
Of Palatine, formerly of Arlington Heights

Nancy Catherine Condon was born May 31, 1924 in Chicago to Frank and Nell (nee Shay) Toomey. She died on Saturday, August 11, of congestive heart disease and pneumonia. She was surrounded by her seven children and her brother and sister.

Nancy was a Chicago native. She was a graduate of Immaculata High School, and as a young woman with grace, poise and a keen intellect became Executive Assistant to the President of the American Baseball League. Then she fell in love with Edward Condon; during World War II, while Ed served in the Navy in the Pacific, Nancy did her part for the war effort working for Lockheed. After the war, the two of them embarked on a lifelong journey together, building a large family and an even larger legacy that spanned over 65 years. It would be an understatement to say that Nancy led a full and active life, raising seven children and, later, devoting herself to 20 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She still made time to volunteer at Northwest Community Hospital and at Our Lady of the Wayside parish and maintain lasting friendships in both the Chicago and Naples, Florida areas. She golfed, played bridge, lunched with her “ ladies of the roundtable” and other longtime friends. What she did, though, paled in comparison to who she was. She had grace and style, a wonderful fashion sense, a love of flowers, of quiet moments reading, as well as great parties. She had an endless interest in not only her children and grandchildren but in the world around her, in national and Illinois politics, health, entertainment and the media. She had an inner dignity, a giving heart, and was the steady strength of her family. In the seemingly endless mishaps that befall large families, she was the one who held hands at bedsides and in emergency rooms, persevered without complaint when troubles came her way, and, by her example, helped us to survive and grow. The poet, Stephen Dunn, wrote: “It’s hard to know exactly how we ease ourselves back from sadness.” She will be missed terribly.
Nancy is survived by her first love, her husband, Ed, and by her seven children, Mark (Barbara) Condon, Sheila Condon (Kathy Lazear) Pires, Ed (Bridgid Roark) Condon, Nancy Condon Sack, Jean (Nancy Kenney) Condon, Cathy Condon (Dan) Harro, and Michael (Mary) Condon; her 20 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; her siblings Tim (Patt) Toomey and Marian Frugo; countless nieces, nephews and cousins, and many wonderful friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Helenmarie Kissel.
