Robert C. Baxter of Arlington Heights, Il died on August 14, 2010.
Services will be held with full honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
Mr. Baxter was the son of the late Charles E. Baxter and Emma R.
(Baxter) Poeter of Rumson NJ.
Mr. Baxter was born in Glen Ridge, NJ, on February 2, 1929, and attended
Glen Ridge and Millburn, NJ schools prior to his appointment from New
Jersey to the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD in 1947. Following
graduation with the Class of 1951, he served a year aboard the destroyer
USS Wren (DD-568) re-commissioned in Charleston SC, and then attended
flight training in Pensacola, FL, and Corpus Christi, TX, after which he
was assigned to Attack Squadron (VA-42) based in Oceana, VA, with
service aboard the carriers USS HORNET and BENNINGTON. He further served
as an instructor at the air defense naval training center at Dam Neck,
VA.
Following his six years of service with the U. S. Navy, Mr. Baxter
joined the Electro-chemicals Department of E. I. DuPont de Nemours & Co.
,Inc., Wilmington DE, and was assigned various marketing positions in
Wilmington DE, Detroit, MI, and Chicago, IL, in a variety of sales and
technical representative assignments, including major accounts manager,
product manager, and sales manager within the department. He retired
from DuPont in 1985 while residing in Arlington Heights IL a suburb of
Chicago.
After retiring, Mr. Baxter established a small technical, consulting
service, serving the electroplating industry in Chicago, and was
particularly well known for his technical knowledge of alkaline,
cyanide-zinc, electroplating processes, having written and published
papers on the subject.
Mr. Baxter was a member of the Naval Academy Alumni Association, the
Naval Academy Foundation, and the Naval Academy Athletic Association,
the Naval League, the American Electroplaters Society, American
Foundrymens Society, the Chicago Drug and Chemical Association, the
United States Golf Association, and the Chicago District Squash Racquets
Association. He supported both the U.S. Olympics and the Illinois
Special Olympics programs.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria J. Baxter, of Arlington Heights, IL;
and five children of a previous marriage Richard W. Baxter, Bruce E.
Baxter, Stephen G. Baxter, Robert C. Baxter, and Rebecca Baxter-Foard
and three step-children; Janine G. Smulyan, Charmaine Luber , Richard G.
Ginger and 11 grandchildren.
