Wendell H. Arnold
Of Arlington Heights

Wendell H. Arnold, an Arlington Heights Resident since 1964, was born June 17, 1918 in Harold, South Dakota to Urey Burke and Alice Vivian (nee Smith) Arnold. He died Monday, August 11, 2008 at his home.

Mr. Arnold was a graduate of Olivet Nazarene University with a B.A. degree in social science and of Syracuse University with an M.A. degree in philosophy. His professional life was spent in the non-profit field beginning in Peoria, Ill. as Executive Director of Goodwill Industries. He then served Goodwill Industries and , later, the United Way in Rockford, Ill. He was Executive Director of the United Way in Sioux City, Iowa before becoming the Associate Executive Director of the Chicago Boys and Girls Clubs. Mr. Arnold joined Roosevelt University in 1967 and was made a Vice President in 1968. He held this position until he retired in 1986. During his tenure he organized three major capital campaigns. He played a key role in bringing Roosevelt University to Arlington Heights.

Shortly after retirement he joined the Board of Directors of the Arlington Heights United Way and was the Campaign Chairman of the 1985-6 fund raising drive. In 1986 he became the founding chairman of the Community Education Foundation and served as the chairman for six years. In 1991 he received a Distinguished Service Award from the Township High School District 214. He has been a Board member of the Lattof YMCA and the Chicago Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago Alumni Association. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Arlington Heights.

His survivors include is wife Bernina M. “Bernie” nee Rupp whom he married August 25, 1940; his son Larry P. (Joan) Arnold of Wayzata, Minn., his daughter Debra Mae (Robert) Weber of Hoffman Estates; his grandchildren Staci (Chris) Becker, Amanda (John) Abel, Sara (Gordon) Williamson, Todd and Amy Weber; and his great grandchildren Jack Abel and Morgan Becker.

Wendell is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Virginia (George) Bigelow and his brother Dr. Urey B. (Jane) Arnold.

Visitation from 3:00 until 8:00 PM, Wednesday, August 13, 2008 at the Glueckert Funeral Home, Ltd., 1520 N. Arlington Heights Road, (4 blocks south of Palatine Road) Arlington Heights. Memorial service 10:30 AM, Thursday, August 14, 2008 at First Presbyterian Church of Arlington Heights, 302 N. Dunton Ave., Arlington Heights followed by a committal service at Memory Gardens Cemetery chapel.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to First Presbyterian Church of Arlington Heights.
