Rev. John J. Hurley
Of Arlington Heights

Father John Hurley was born on January 22, 1931 in St. Paul, Minnesota, the fifth of six children born to William Hurley and Marian Clark Hurley. His family came to Chicago in 1934. Father Hurley attended St. Gertrude and St. Jerome Elementary Schools. Following elementary school graduation, he enrolled at Quigley Preparatory Seminary. He completed studies for the Priesthood at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein, Illinois and was ordained a Priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago on May 1, 1956 by Samuel Cardinal Stritch.

Father’s first assignment was at Our Lady of Loretto Church in Hometown. After serving as an Associate Pastor for six years, he moved two miles north to Queen of the Universe Church in Chicago as Associate Pastor. In 1966, he was appointed to the faculty of Niles College Seminary of Loyola University; there he was a Spiritual Director of college-age seminarians and a lecturer in Psychology. He obtained an M.A. in psychology from Loyola University in 1969.

Father Hurley’s next assignment was Chaplain to the Catholic students and faculty at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago. While Chaplain at Northeastern, he also served as Associate Pastor of St. Veronica Church in Chicago. The two assignments continued until 1975. At that time, he was appointed Chaplain to the Catholic students and faculty of the University of Chicago. He served in that role until 1983, when he became Pastor of St. Edna Church in Arlington Heights, and continued as Pastor for 19 years. Father Hurley retired as Pastor in February, 2002, but was appointed Pastor Emeritus and continued to live at St. Edna’s to minister to the people there.

From 1995 to 1999, Father Hurley served as Dean of Deanery 1B, covering the Northwest Suburban area of Cook County.

Father Hurley is survived by his sister Sr. Marian Hurley BVM, his many nieces and nephews and their several generations; and his sister’s-in-law Jane, Irene and Patricia Hurley.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Mary (William) Gillies and his brothers William, Jr., Frank and James V.

Visitation from 3:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Monday, August 5, 2013 and from 10:00 AM until time of Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at St. Edna Catholic Church, 2525 N. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights, IL 60004. Committal Service 2:30 PM at Queen of Heaven Cemetery Interment Chapel, Hillside.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to The Fr. John J Hurley Endowment Fund, for outreach to the poor, C/O St. Edna Church.
