Michael F. “Sonny” Sherman
Of Arlington Heights

Michael F. “Sonny” Sherman was born on July 24, 1917 in Chicago to Michael H. and Theresa L. (nee Bonner) Sherman. He passed away on July 9, 2009 in Arlington Heights.

Michael is a Navy veteran having served after WWII. Sonny was a graduate of Alvernia Conservatory of Music. He was instrumental in the founding of the first Glenview Naval Air Station Navy Band. Sonny was a musician who played for many years at Toppers and The Red Fox in Chicago. He was a founding member of the Church of Christian Liberty where he and his wife, Virginia “Sherry” were a musical mainstay. Mr. Sherman taught kindergarten and first grade Bible classes at the Christian Liberty Academy for over 40 years.

He is survived by his sons, James of Arlington Heights, John (Wendy) of Elkhart, IN and Michael (Kelly) of Eden Prairie, MN; his six grandchildren; his eight great-grandchildren; his brothers, Russell (Mary) Sherman of Columbus, OH and Joe (Alice) Sherman of Lake Geneva, WI; his sister, Mary Jane (the late Don) Zeiger of Roselle; and many nieces and nephews.

Sonny was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia “Sherry”; his son, Gary; and his siblings, Jack (Helen) Sherman, Theresa (the late Frank) Ginter, Kay (the late Warren “Buzz”) Prieman, Margarite Sherman and Jane Doris Sherman.

Visitation from 3:00 PM until 9:00 PM Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at the Glueckert Funeral Home, Ltd., 1520 N. Arlington Heights Rd., (4 blocks south of Palatine Rd.) Arlington Heights. Memorial service 7:00 PM Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at the Christian Liberty Academy, Grace Gymnasium, 502 W. Euclid, Arlington Heights. Interment private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Christian Liberty Academy Scholarship Fund, 502 W. Euclid, Arlington Heights, IL 60004.
