Estelle Bertell
Of Arlington Heights, formerly of Chicago’s Wicker Park Community

Estelle Bertell, 98, a longtime resident of Chicago’s Wicker Park community, passed away on Tuesday, June 15, 2010, at the Lutheran Home in Arlington Heights after an extended stay. Born May 1, 1912 in Lublin, Poland, Mrs. Bertell lived briefly in London, England, with her mother, Frances Marczyk Krol and siblings before joining her father, Walter Krol, in Chicago where he had invested in an apartment building for his young family. Mrs. Bertell graduated from Lucy Flower High School, excelling in home arts. She was a master seamstress, milliner and chef. The majority of her career was spent at Reliable Furniture Co. in Chicago. After retirement she continued her devotion to her family, executing complex sewing projects, cooking ethnic and classic American specialties and providing loving support and counsel.

Mrs. Bertell is survived by her daughter, Diane F. (Martin W.) Hamilton of Arlington Heights; her grandchildren, Greg (Nancy) Hamilton, Marya (Dave) Horstmeyer, Chris (Tresa) Hamilton and Douglas (Mary) Hamilton; her great grandchildren, Michael Horstmeyer, Nicholas, Andrew, Harry, Grace, Katie and Jane Hamilton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis V. Bertell, sister Jenny Prowicz and brothers, Walter and Michael Krol.

Visitation for Mrs. Bertell will be held Monday, June 21, 2010, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Lutheran Home, 800 W. Oakton, Arlington Heights, IL 60004, followed by Mass at 11:00 AM in St. John’s Chapel and burial at St. Adalbert Cemetery in Niles.
