Elizabeth Helmer was born July 23, 1920 in Oak Park to Hugh and Ethel (nee Cunningham) Phelan. She died May 4, 2011 in Taunton, MA of natural causes.
Elizabeth met her husband, Clifford Helmer, in Illinois during WW II. He was a naval officer eventually stationed at Pearl Harbor. They were married in 1946 and had five children. Over the years they lived in Ohio, Illinois, New Jersey and Massachusetts. Mrs. Helmer was an active volunteer at the catholic churches wherever they lived. She was chosen Volunteer of the year at St. Edna Parish in the late 1990’s.
Mrs. Helmer is survived by her children Richard (Pamela) Helmer of Short Hills, NJ, John Helmer of Willistion Park, NY, Mary (Edward) Gaudette of Raynham, MA, Patricia (late Christopher) Oles of Tarpon Springs, FL and Robert (Rachel) Helmer of CA; her eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren and her sister Ethel Phelan of Glen Ellyn.
She is preceded in death by her husband Clifford Helmer in 1981.
Mrs. Helmer will lie in state Monday, May 9, 2010 from 9:00 AM until the time of Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM at St. Raymond Catholic Church, 301 S. Ioka (Lincoln & Elmhurst), Mt. Prospect. Burial will be at All Saints Cemetery.
