John Warrington Sherman
of Arlington Heights
John Warrington Sherman, 89,
died May 3, 2008, at the
Lutheran Home in Arlington
Heights surrounded by his
family and loved ones. John
was born on July 1, 1918, in
Baltimore, Maryland.
Receiving his Juris Doctor
degree with honors from the
University of Baltimore Law
School before his twentieth
birthday distinguished John
as the youngest student to
earn a law degree and pass
his bar examinations in the
history of the state of
Maryland. This made him too
young to practice law but
once he was of age he began
work as a tax attorney with
the Harrison Firm in
Baltimore.
He married Helen Stewart on
January 25, 1941, and served
as First Lieutenant in the
U.S. Army during World War
II. After the war, the
couple resided in Baltimore
where four of their five
children were born and John
began his 35 year career
with the American Oil
Company (Standard Oil /
Amoco). In 1954 John and his
family relocated to New York
where their fifth child was
born. During his tenure as
Chief Trademark Council at
Amoco, John handled multiple
national and international
assignments, spoke on the
importance of honesty in
advertising, and never lost
a case. For decades he
remained a member of the
Chicago Bar Association and
was very active in the
United States Trademark
Association.
The Sherman family moved to
Kenilworth, Illinois, in
1960, where they resided for
37 years and were members of
Saints Faith, Hope and
Charity Church. John and
Helen then lived together in
Luther Village in Arlington
Heights for 8 years.
Friends and family will
remember him as a learned,
intelligent and cultured man
with an enduring passion for
history, opera, poetry and
the law. A devoted husband
and loving father with a
subtle wit and astounding
memory, John will be greatly
missed.
Survivors include daughters
