James E. Riley
Of Arlington Heights

James E. Riley was born September 8, 1919 in Joliet to William Vincent and Anna (nee Carbery) Riley. He died Tuesday, May 9, 2006 at his home.

Mr. Riley retired in 1996 from his private law practice in Chicago after more than 20 years. Previously he was an attorney for the Illinois Attorney General's office, consumer fraud division; the Chicago Board of Education, where he successfully argued a case before the Illinois Supreme Court. Before he became a lawyer, he taught English for several years including at Leo High School in Chicago, Waukegan High School and Evergreen Park High School.

He received undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Illinois and a Juris Doctor degree from DePaul University. James served in the Navy during WW II and in the Naval Reserves during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was a classic car enthusiast, avid golfer, classical music aficionado, enjoyed travel home and abroad, a spirited political debate and old Hollywood movies.

James' survivors include his wife of 51 years, Jane nee Cordell whom he married August 25, 1954; his children Susan Nicholes of Walnut Creek, Calif., Kathryn (Bill Zars) Riley of Arlington Heights and Michael James Riley of Sandwich, Ill.; his siblings Geraldine McMaster, Dolores Schaller, William Riley; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial visitation from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM, Saturday, May 13, 2006 at the Glueckert Funeral Home, Ltd., 1520 N. Arlington Heights Rd., (4 blocks south of Palatine Rd.) Arlington Heights. Memorial Mass 1:00 PM, Saturday, May 13, 2006 St. James Church, 831 N. Arlington Heights Rd., Arlington Heights.
