John C. Hough
John C. Hough was born January 12, 1911 in Chicago to James E. and
Catherine (nee Cannon) Hough. He passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2005 at
Arlington Living and Rehab Center in Long Grove.
John served on the Chicago Fire Dept. from May 1937 to January of 1974.
In 1947 John was awarded the $100 Herald American Heroism Award, in 1954
he earned the highest Fire Dept. Decoration, The Lambert Tree Medal
Award for rescuing a person from an 18th floor ledge of the Wrigley
Building. He was also awarded the Chicago Safety Council Award as
Outstanding Fireman of the Year in 1954. In October of 1942 John
enlisted in the Coast Guard and served as an Electrician's Mate aboard
LST 64, participating in many initial landings of enemy held islands.
Honorably discharged in 1945, John returned to his duties on the Chicago
Fire Department, to retire as Battalion Chief of Engine Co. 108.
John is survived by his brother Thomas H. Hough; sister-in-law Carol
Hough, as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen (nee Coleman) Hough;
brothers George (Ellie Jo), James, Michael (Helene) and Joseph (Anne)
Hough.
Visitation Tuesday from 3:00 PM until 9:00 PM at the Glueckert
Funeral Home, Ltd., 1520 N. Arlington Heights Rd., (4 blocks south of
Palatine Rd.) Arlington Heights. Prayers will be held 9:15 AM,
Wednesday, at the Glueckert Funeral Home, Ltd., proceeding to St. James
Church, 831 N. Arlington Heights Rd., Arlington Heights for Mass at
10:00 AM. Burial will be at All Saints Cemetery .
