Charles W.
“Chuck” Doering
Of Arlington Heights
Charles W. Doering
was born on
September 25, 1930
in Chilton, WI to
Arnold and Norma
(nee Boehme) Doering.
He passed away on
April 2, 2009 at his
home in Arlington
Heights as a result
of complications
related to
Parkinson’s disease.
After a childhood
living in small
towns in Wisconsin,
Illinois, and
Missouri, Chuck
received a BS in
Industrial
Management from the
University of
Illinois. He then
served his country
as an officer in the
United States Navy
aboard a destroyer,
the USS Porterfield.
Chuck focused much
of his energy on a
career in labor and
industrial
relations, which
began with General
Electric in
Cincinnati, Ohio.
While there, he
earned an MBA at the
University of
Cincinnati. He then
spent many years
with Navistar
International. After
a career that
enabled him to
travel extensively
and live in Paris,
France with Norma,
he retired as
international
vice-president for
human resources.
He found his second,
and most rewarding,
career as the
assistant dean for
development in the
College of
Engineering at the
University of
Illinois. Chuck
substantially
expanded engineering
development
activities,
including the
private support that
established the
Grainger Engineering
Library Information
Center. He segued
into a position at
the U of I
Foundation as
director of gift
development.
In addition to his
work at the U of I,
as a Certified
Fundraising
Executive, Chuck
consulted for
several nonprofit
and university
development efforts
throughout the
years.
Chuck was a founding
member of the Life
Long Learning
Institute at Harper
College and was an
important stimulus
to the success the
program enjoys
today.
Chuck was a very
active member of Our
Saviour’s Lutheran
Church in Arlington
Heights. He
especially enjoyed
spearheading the
fundraising drive
for a new pipe organ
and serving on the
Pastoral Call
Committee.
Through the years
his church, Lutheran
Social Services of
Illinois, the
University of
Illinois, and
numerous other
organizations have
appreciated his
generosity and
extreme dedication
to philanthropic
activities.
He is survived by
his wife of 55
years, Norma (nee
Krueger); his
children, Beth
(Larry) Obrock of
Atlanta, GA and
Michael (Nanette
Gladbach) Doering of
Mechanicsburg, PA;
his grandchildren,
Erin and Kyle Obrock
and Ellie and Karyna
Doering; his
brother, Arlin “Al”
(Sue) Doering of
Fergus Falls, MN;
and his
sister-in-law,
