Harriett Elizabeth Moore
of Barrington, formerly of Arlington Heights
A memorial service in celebration of the life of
Harriett Elizabeth Moore of Arlington Heights
and Barrington will be held on Saturday, March
2nd at 10 a.m.at the First Presbyterian Church
of Arlington Heights, 302 North Dunton Avenue.
The daughter of Edgar B. Williams and June
Gafford Williams, and the great-granddaughter of
Omaha pioneer families, she was born on February
1, 1920 in Omaha, Nebraska where she received
her early education. She was a resident of
Arlington Heights from 1954 to 2002 and
Barrington from 2002 until the time of her death
on February 6, 2013.
Her undergraduate study in English literature
was completed at the University of Nebraska at
Omaha, and her graduate work at Oberlin College,
Oberlin, Ohio. While at the University of
Nebraska she was elected to Sigma Tau Delta and
Sigma Pi Phi honorary English and education
fraternities, and was a member of Pi Omega Pi
(Chi Omega) sorority. She taught English and
journalism in secondary school in Nebraska and
was a service representative for Northwestern
Bell Headquarters in Omaha. She was accepted for
membership in the Omaha Chapter of the Daughters
of the American Revolution.
After her marriage, and while her husband
studied in Law School, she was employed in the
visual arts department and the business office
at the University of Michigan and represented
the university in its fundraising drive for the
Ann Arbor United Fund. Later, she was a
homemaker, and her life was dedicated to her
family.
She was the wife of Bruce Lawrence Moore for 55
years; mother of Bruce Lawrence, Jr. (Rosita) of
Cary, Mary Melissa (Daniel) Kelly of Streamwood,
Deborah Carol (William) Audenby of Burlington
Wisconsin, Douglas Laird (Era Joy) of Cary, and
Victoria Ellen (Scott Chan) Moore of Los Altos,
California; grandmother of Tara (Andrew) St.
Clair, Robert Ohlson, Tamara (Nicolas) Carlino,
Kendra Moore Chan, Kevin Williams Chan, and
Keiashia Moore and great-grandmother of Iman,
Jacob, Jordan and Jaden Ohlson and Colin, Paige
and Fintan St. Clair; sister of Ann Jeannette
McGarvey of Santa Monica, California.
She was a member of the First Church of Christ,
Scientist, Arlington Heights, and of the Mother
Church, Boston. Her ashes will be interred, as
are those of her husband, in the Memorial Prayer
Garden at the First Presbyterian Church of
Arlington Heights. Memorial gifts can be made to
