Robert N. Sum, Sr.
Of Arlington Heights

Robert N. Sum, Sr. was born on December 10, 1932 in Chicago to George and Bertha (nee Mix) Sum. He died Saturday, February 4, 2012 in Arlington Heights.

Mr. Sum graduated from Purdue University with a degree in mechanical engineering. Robert was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity, where he received the Delta Beta Xi Honorary Award. Robert served as a First Lieutenant in the Army. He worked as a Vice President of Sales for Paul J. Krez Company and was a past member of the editorial board for National Commercial and Industrial Insulation Standards. He was an honorary founder of the Elks National Foundation and a long-time member of the Des Plaines Elks Club #1526.

Robert is survived by his spouse of 51 years, Marcia A. (nee Ihrig) Sum; his children, Michael J. (Sylvie) Sum, Gregory G. Sum, Steven G. (Kathy) Kappes-Sum and Jeffrey A. (the late Jerri Cravens) Sum; his grandchildren, Garrett M. Sum, Austin M. Sum, Elise N. Sum, Kyle S. Kappes-Sum, Luke E. Kappes-Sum and Rachel L. Sum; his sister, Eleanor Lauten; and his nieces, Patricia and Mary.

He was preceded in death by his son, Rev. Robert N. Sum, Jr., O.S.B.; his brother, George C. Sum, Jr. and his parents.

Visitation from 4:00 PM until 9:00 PM, Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at Glueckert Funeral Home Ltd., 1520 N. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights. Prayers 8:45 AM, Thursday, February 9, 2012 at the funeral home, proceeding to Our Lady of the Wayside Catholic Church, 450 S. Mitchell, Arlington Heights, for Mass at 9:30 AM. Interment will be at All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Rev. Robert Sum, O.S.B. Memorial Fund at St. Procopius Abbey, 5601 College Road, Lisle, IL 60532, Masses, or the charity of your choice.
