Ann Nilson Cox Otzen
Of Arlington Heights

A long time resident of Arlington Heights, Illinois and Williams Bay Wisconsin, was born October 5, 1928 in Evanston, Illinois to Karl and Thelma Ruth “Freddie” (nee Nescher) Nilson. She died Wednesday, February 25, 2009 in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

Mrs. Otzen was a retired schoolteacher for over 30 years with District #214 at Arlington, Prospect and later Elk Grove High Schools. Over her career she taught English, Speech and Social Studies.

Ann was given the Excellence in Education Award in 1990 and in 1992 she was awarded the VFW-Voice of Democracy Teacher of the Year in the State of Illinois Award.” She also was a sponsor for the National Honor Society, Debate coach and class advisor. Ann traveled extensively with student groups and clubs and enjoyed gardening.

Her survivors include her son John Myrland (Michelle) Otzen Jr. of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, her grandchildren Megan Elizabeth and Karen Ann Otzen; her sister Carol (Jim) Bunting.

Ann is preceded in death by her husband John Myrland Otzen; her parents and her stepfather Donald Cox.

Memorial service 3:00 PM, Sunday, March 1, 2009 at First Presbyterian Church of Arlington Heights, 302 N. Dunton Ave., Arlington Heights.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to American Cancer Society, 1114 N. Arlington Heights Rd., Arlington Heights, IL 60004.
