Bernard O'Kelly
Of Arlington Heights
Visitation for Bernard O'Kelly, 78 will be held Saturday at 9:00 AM
followed by a Funeral Mass at 9:30 AM at Our Lady of the Wayside Church,
440 S. Mitchell, Arlington Heights. Burial at St. Michael the Archangel
Cemetery will be private.
Born August 10, 1926 in Winnipeg, Manitoba he died Wednesday, February
9th peacefully, at home.
Bernard earned a M.A. and Ph.D in English from Harvard University and
was a Professor of English and the Dean of the College of Arts and
Sciences at the University of North Dakota for 29 years. He was for many
years a member and leader of national organizations of academic deans,
arts and science colleges, and humanities groups. He was instrumental in
establishing the North Dakota Humanities Council. He retired in 1995
after a 45-year academic career.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years Marcia (nee Levin); children Liz
(Tom Kivlahan) O'Kelly of Arlington Heights and Peter (Kerry) O'Kelly of
Andover, Massachusetts; grandchildren Erin, Stephen, Katherine and
Chris; brother-in-law David Peterkin, and many nieces and nephews.
Bernard was preceded in death by his parents, Bartholomew and Cora nee
Beadle; son Christopher; sisters: Patricia McCormick and Audrey Peterkin.
