Alice G. Brown

The prayerful vigil for Alice Brown, age 85 ended Saturday, January 11, 2014 when she died peacefully in the presence of family members.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Richard, daughters Linda Shields of Reno, Nevada and Susan Szakin (Peter), and grandchildren Zachary and Grace all of Colleyville, Texas, a sister Tillie Gorniak of Mt. Prospect, plus numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son Donald and her parents Frederich and Mathilda Gylden.

Together with her husband she played a key role in the establishment of the Richard T. Brown Agency and enjoyed the many interactions between staff, clients, brokers and companies they represented.

She took pleasure in playing bridge with various neighborhood and church groups, golfing with her husband and different ladies groups, cross country skiing with her family as well as a ski group that traveled to different local and mid-west locations plus two trips to the Austrian Alps all in the search for perfect skiing powder.

Her many years as a Sunday school teacher at First United Methodist Church of Arlington Heights and also as a language and book reading volunteer for Vietnamese lower grade school students in School District 25, and her time as a volunteer in the Travelers Aid office at O’Hare Airport all were particularly gratifying to her.
It was an uplifting experience for her when as a member of the Junior Women’s Club of Arlington Heights she visited many times to the medical facility at Great Lakes Naval Base and brought her infectious laughter and joyful spirit to recuperating military personnel.

But most pleasurable of all was the time spent with her family and especially her grandchildren highlighted by trips to Hilton Head Island where the family gathered for many spring/summer reunions.

The Memorial service is scheduled for 11:00 am Saturday, January 18, 2014 at Church of the Incarnation, UMC, 330 W. Golf Road, Arlington Heights. Memorial visitation begins at 10:15 am.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (www.jdrf.org), 11 South LaSalle Street Suite 1800 Chicago, IL 60603
