Allen James Sander
Of Huntley
Allen James Sanders was born on January 14, 1941 in Elmhurst to Alfred
H. and Hilda (nee Moss) Sander. He died at his home on January 6, 2010.
Mr. Sander graduated from Arlington Heights School in 1959; from Bradley
University in 1963 with a degree in Civil Engineering and from Illinois
Institute of Technology in 1988 with a Masters degree in Public
Administration.
He served in the US Navy Mobile Construction Battalion 6 from September
1963 to September 1965. Constructed projects in Roto, Spain; Sigonela,
Sicily; Ross Station and McMurdo, Antarctica and in Argentia
Newfoundland.
Al was employed by the Village of Arlington Heights for 31 years in the
positions of Construction Engineer, Director of Engineering and Public
Works Director. He finished his professional career working 7 years for
Mackie Consultants, Rosemont, IL, as Senior Civil Engineer, assisting
the owner in many diverse projects.
Mr. Sander was deeply involved in the Chicago Metro Chapter of the
American Public Works Association and served in many elected positions
including president of both the Surburban Branch and the Metro Chapter.
He received several Local Awards and was selected by his peers as a Top
10 Public Work’s Leader in North America in 1984.
He is survived by his wife Virginia Sherrill (nee Adelsbach) Sander; his
children, Kirsten (Brian) Heft of Westerville, OH, Karlin (Brian) Downes
of Lloyd Harbor, NY; his step-children, Kathleen (Walter) Stoneski of
Elk Grove, Ken (Suzanne) Beres of Elmhurst, Debbie (Scott) Sanderson of
West Simsbury, CT, Michael (Suzanne) Beres of Arvada, CO and his 12
grandchildren.
Mr. Sander was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Joan
Thill.
Al is remembered with a smile on his face and his willingness to help
others.
Visitation 3:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Sunday, January 10, 2010 at the
Glueckert Funeral Home, 1520 N. Arlington Heights Rd.,(four blocks south
of Palatine Rd.) Arlington Heights. In State from 9:00 AM until the time
of Funeral Service at 10:00 AM, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 111 W.
Olive St., Arlington Heights. Interment Memory Gardens Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to American Cancer Society,
