John Schmidt
Of Arlington Heights for
53 years
John Schmidt was born
November 23, 1914 To Johann
and Anna (nee Langer)
Schmidt in Riverdale, IL. He
died January 5, 2007 at his
home in Arlington Heights.
When nearing the end of his
senior year at Thornton
Township High School, his
family moved to a farm in
Indiana. He was very proud
of the time he spent in the
CCC’s in Ferninand, Indiana
during the Depression. After
that he came to Chicago with
his brother and found work
as an apprentice tool and
die maker. They worked at
Soreng Mfg. in Chicago in
the late 1930’s and started
Cardinal Tool & Mfg. Co. in
1956. He retired in 1982.
He had been a frequent
contributor to the Daily
Herald Opinion page and all
who met him knew he was a
dedicated liberal who
enjoyed political debates.
John was a member of the
Knights of Columbus Holy
Rosary Council #4483 and a
member of the Elizabeth Ann
Seton Assembly.
His survivors include his
children Kenneth Schmidt of
Gainesville, FL, Barbara
(Darrell) Cooper of Huntley,
Terence Schmidt of Mesa, AZ;
his step-children Gail
(John) Katz, Kim Alterini,
Susan (Jim) McPherrin,
Barbara (Scott) Reader, John
(Juliann McDermott) Alterini,
Mary (Jay) Brodie-Geller,
Paul Alterini, and Lisa
(Brad) Swaback; his
grandchildren Christine
(Michael) Corrigan, Jean
Cooper, Scott Cooper, Philip
Schmidt and Paul Schmidt;
his great grand daughter
Zaidie M. Schmidt; his
sister Louise LeGrande and
sister-in-law Anne Schmidt;
and his many nieces and
nephews.
John is preceded in death by
his first wife Vera (nee
Petty) Schmidt who died in
1985, his second wife Jean
Alterini-Schmidt who died in
2006 and his brother Richard
Schmidt who died in 2002.
